Upcoming happenings at Local Economy
A recent Saturday morning

Hello!

Times like these, it feels both good and imperative to maintain and strengthen our ties with neighbors. All of them. Right now, Local Economy feels like a little hive, buzzing with different people coming to know each other. We're also mixing in ways to connect with and support local organizations that do a lot for our community.

Outside the events listed here, anyone (not just members!) can come by Wednesday to Saturday, 8:30am-4pm. We've got coffee from Painted Leopard til 2pm. People work. People chat. People buy miso caramel popcorn and those fancy Swedish fish. It's great.

On Sunday, March 8 (International Women's Day), the legendary local non-profit Girls Garage will be in the house to share their work teaching design and construction to girls and gender expansive youth in the Bay Area. For the party/fundraiser, we'll have bites from Good Luck Bakery (!) and Linger Longer (!!) as well as wine from Best Friends (!!!). RSVP here.

Later that week on March 13th, we'll host No Binary, No Problem, a team of QTPOC runners who are getting ready for a wild 340-mile ultramarathon relay from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. You don't have to be a runner to appreciate their crazy beautiful dreams. RSVP here.

We try to get this newsletter out to the broader community every couple weeks, so here's a look at the upcoming schedule.

The Next Couple Weeks at Local Economy

  • Wed, Mar 4, 6pm: End of Days Book Event with Chris Jennings
In a new book, Chris Jennings tells the story of the Randy Weaver, a reclusive, mountain-dwelling survivalist, within the context of the long history of apocalyptic Christianity in the United States. Jennings' previous book was Paradise Now: The Story of American Utopianism. He'll be in conversation with Alex Blasdel.
  • Thurs, Mar 5, 6pm: Spring Medicinal Herb and Mushroom Talk & Tea Tasting
Join “forager and fruit fiend” Cindy Doedee to learn all about common local Bay Area spring time herbs & mushrooms, featuring those significant in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Enjoy a sampling of foraged fresh and dried herbs during and after the talk.
  • Sun, Mar 8, 4pm: Girls Garage Party and Fundraiser
Girls Garage has led the way for years in empowering young women and GNC youth through hands-on design and construction. For this event, we'll have bites from Good Luck Bakery and Linger Longer as well as wine from Best Friends. This is a fundraiser but also a support-raiser! If you want to get involved in other ways (including sending your kids to their awesome programs), come through and learn more.
  • Wed, Mar 11, 6pm: Neighbor-to-Neighbor Teach-In on Supporting Immigrants
Given what we’re seeing in Minnesota and have seen in Los Angeles and Chicago, how do we get prepared for the prospective arrival of ICE in the Bay Area? We'll learn how to support immigrants now and to plan ahead for escalation.
  • Thurs, Mar 12, 4pm: "Late Night" @ Local Economy
You've been asking: come hang out with host Nara and do a little reading or writing or pondering later into the evening. Basically, regular daytime hours vibes, but we don't kick you out until 8 PM AND there will be a fun optional activity or two, including (this time only!) sorting sheep's wool for our very locally-made felted sound insulation. No RSVP necessary (or even possible).
  • Fri, Mar 13, 5pm: How (and Why) to Run 340 miles
As noted above, NBNP runners are raising funds for the wildest run, an ultramarathon from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Along the way, they'll be raising awareness about gender expansiveness in sports. Your ticket will go directly to supporting their endeavor.
  • Sat, Mar 14, 1pm: Heyday's Colors of California: Volume 2
Heyday associate publisher/poet/LE member Marthine Satris is back for Volume 2 of this series. She'll be joined by three artists: Elissa Callen, a natural pigment maker and ecological artist whose artwork is featured in Meeting the Mushrooms of Los Angeles; Krystle Hickman photographs native bees and their behavior who wrote The ABCs of California's Native Bees based on five years of observations here at home; and Robin Lee Carlson, author of The Cold Canyon Fire Journals.
  • Sat, Mar 14, 5:30pm: Spring Fling Mixer
Join fabulous host Myisha Battle for a fun, low-pressure Spring Fling Mixer with a twist: participants are heartily encouraged to bring a single friend, maybe one who dates women. Here’s why: Local Economy’s membership has turned out to be predominantly female and we love that for us. We also know that there are some wonderful, emotionally intelligent, community-minded guys out there, not to mention queer folx across the rainbow—many of whom are part of our extended circles. This is your chance to introduce them.
  • Sun, Mar 15, 3pm: Deema Shehabi's Women's Month Event
Poet Deema Shehabi returns to Local Economy to present a quintet of excellent poets from across cultures: Sara Borjas, Shadab Zeest Hashmi, Persis Karim, Nathalie Khankan, and Priscilla Wathington.

One Quick Note

We're making an effort to keep the calendar on our website—thelocaleconomy.com— updated with events. There's much more coming up in March than we've listed here. Or, if you prefer your event calendars in paper form, there's one of those at the shop, too. See you soon!
